The Classical Music Winners of The Grammys

For those unschooled in awards show air dates (gasp!), the 52nd Grammys aired Sunday night, promising musical accolades, A-list performances and - most importantly - completely bizarre outfits from Lady GaGa (she did not disappoint, if you saw it). Of course I awaited (when the show was over - you know these weren't televised) the crowning of the classical music winners; although I'll be the first to say the Grammys committee's decisions often puzzle me and I take the winners list with a grain of salt.

That being said, the one and only Renee Fleming won for classical vocal performance for her Verismo CD (recorded with the Orchestra Sinfonica Di Milano Giuseppi Verdi); Nathan Gunn won for opera recording of the year for his performance in Benjamin Britten's Billy Budd... This opera Grammy also went to the London Symphony, its conductor Daniel Harding, as well as other soloists Neal Davies, Jonathan Lemalu, Matthew Rose and Gidon Saks ... but I had to chose someone for the picture... right, Nathan?

Other classical winners of the evening included San Francisco Symphony's Mahler's Symphony No. 8; Adagio Symphony No. 10 for best classical album; this recording also took home best choral performance and best engineered album.

The Grammy for best orchestral performance went to James Levine and the Boston Symphony Orchestra for their take on Ravel's "Daphnis et Chloe." Classical producer of the year went to Steven Epstein, whose work this year included Doctor Atomic, Mass, Corigliano: A Dylan Thomas Trilogy, Fauré: Piano Quintets and Yo-Yo Ma & Friends: Songs Of Joy And Peace, which won the Grammy for classical crossover album.

For the complete list of classical Grammy winners, head over to the official Grammy site (you'll also see the other nominees).

The Grammys were a drag, but Renee looks great. This photo
reminds me of Dynasty. Who do you think would be left standing
between Alexis and Renee? Now that would be good television.
