Gonzalo Rubalcaba Quartet

Cuban keyboard ace Gonzalo Rubalcaba was given a tremendous reception when he performed at the Munich Klaviersommer.

Accompanying him were Reinaldo Melian (trumpet), Philipe Cabrera (bass) and Julio Barretto (drums). The infectious vitality of their music, with its dazzling range of rhythms, moods and sounds, prompted Werner Burkhardt of the Süddeutsche Zeitung to write: "Even when Rubalcaba plays softly, you listen to him. But when he lets rip, he awakens the most shameless urge to live life to the point of no return."

This live recording of their performance, which includes several pieces by Rubalcaba, as well as by Charlie Parker and Miles Davis, captures the excitement they generated with their playing.

Ascension Oratorios

Sigiswald Kuijken at the Leipzig Bach Festival 2003 conducts two of the most remarkable vocal works by J.S. Bach and his most famous son. The two-part cantata "Ascension Oratorio" has its origin in an elder secular work and includes some arias which occur again in the b Minor mass. The thematical related oratorio by C.P.E. Bach, originated 40 years later, is an important masterpiece of the genre and tells with multifaceted musical colours the story of the Ascension of the Christ.

Ravel: Heure Espagnole, L' (Opéra de Lyon)

Ravel's love of clocks, automata and of Spain found a witty and colourful expression in this musical comedy. The tale of conjugal infidelity is full of brilliantly inventive music, shot through with Spanish flavour and the ticking and whirring of the clockmaker Torquemada's timepieces. At the centre of Philippe Sireuil's stylish production is Marie-Thérèse Keller who, as the unfaithful wife Concepción, is every bit as fiery, earthy and tantalising as Carmen. Louis Langrée conducts. This live recording comes from the Lyon National Opera.

Bach: Motets and Sinfonias

This festive concert from the Gethsemanekirche in Berlin marks the 60th anniversary of the RIAS Kammerchor. Under the baton of the new chief conductor Hans-Christoph Rademann, the RIAS Kammerchor and the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin are performing famous Motets by Johann Sebastian Bach, interspersed with some fine instrumental works of the composer. Founded in 1948, the choir enjoys a worldwide reputation as one of the best ensembles of its kind.

When Edvard Grieg set Ibsen's "Peer Gynt" to music, he produced an unfathomable masterpiece, choosing to accentuate certain details, setting emphases and plumbing depths. Choreographer Heinz Spoerli traces Peer Gynt's steps through the medium of dance drawing on the works of two contemporary composers Brett Dean and Mark Anthony Turnage. Whilst Grieg sets a classical narrative in the sections using modern music Spoerli uses a modern, expressive style of dance which further heightens the sense of drama of the piece.

Prokofiev: Romeo and Juliet

Choreography by Kenneth MacMillan, adapted by Monica Parker, Georgina Parkinson & Julie Lincoln. The revival of the classically choreographed version of Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet by senior choreographer Kenneth MacMillan enjoyed a phenomenal success at La Scala in January 2000: it was the first time that Alessandra Ferri and Angel Corella, the acclaimed stars of the American Ballet Theatre, had danced together on stage. Hailed by the Italian press as the "new star couple", they both brought to their roles the youthfulness and innocence reflected in Prokofiev's music.

András Schiff plays Bach

Bach's French Suites, which he composed during his years at Cöthen (1717-1723), are among the finest inducements to practise that any teacher has ever made to a pupil. In this case Bach wrote them for his young wife, Anna Magdalena. The over-riding impression left by these suites is one of endearing tunefulness. Clavier-Übung II is a later collection of didactic keyboard pieces. It comprises two greatly contrasted works: the Italian Concerto and the Overture in the French Style. These performances admirably demonstrate the thoughtful and persuasive approach that András Schiff adopts when performing Bach.
