This recording, from the 1992 Munich Klaviersommer, features a relaxed concert of mellow and melodic jazz music with vocalist and trumpeter Vince Jones, one of Australia's most popular jazz musicians. He is joined by Lloyd Swanton on double bass, Barney McCall on piano and Andrew Gander on drums.
Their programme comprises standards as well as compositions by Jones, including a moving personal testimony to his grandparents, Rainbow Cake, a heartfelt plea for greater care for the planet, Don't Jettison Everything Please, dedicated to Greenpeace; and Future Girl, the title track of a recent Vince Jones album.
Other songs are the admonitory Brother, This is Your Life; Blame it on My Youth, made famous by Nat King Cole; Lost My Mind in a Wild Romance; the deeply sentimental More Than You'll Ever Know; and two more up tempo numbers - The Big City is For Me and Don't Worry 'Bout a Thing ('Cos Nothing's Going to Turn Out Right). For an encore they perform Blue, of which Jones says 'it may sound sad but it's a happy song'.
Vince Jones was born in Glasgow, Scotland, in March 1954, but at the age of eleven he moved with his family to Australia, where he lives today. The son of a musician, Vince was exposed to the jazz greats at an early age. As a child he heard his father arranging and performing the jazz standards of Duke Ellington and Count Basie. Vince began playing the club circuit at the age of twenty and he soon formed his own band so that he could maintain control over the style of music to be performed and the direction it would take. His first attraction was to R&B, but his deep-rooted love for jazz soon surfaced. He has toured in Europe with his band and released a number of recordings.
