ROBERTO ALAGNA
AND THE CHORUS OF THE DRESDEN SEMPER OPER
This glittering open-air gala of Romantic classics with Angela Gheorghiù and Roberto Alagna was recorded on a perfect summer’s evening in Dresden. Giuseppe Sinopoli conducted the Dresden Staatskapelle and the Choir of the Dresden Staatsoper. Two of opera’s most exciting vocal talents, Gheorghiù and Alagna both have superstar quality and when they perform together their love of singing and their love for each other radiates from the stage. The chemistry is thrilling.
The audience packed into the square in front of the historic Semper Oper was treated to a musical banquet as the sky gradually darkened to black through a breathtaking spectrum of blues and purples, the glorious sounds and sparkling light from the specially-constructed stage riveting all attention.
The singers’ programme of solos and duets from operas by Verdi (Otello, La forza del destino), Bizet (Carmen) and Puccini (Madama Butterfly, Tosca) was complemented by orchestral and choral passages drawn from works by the same composers. The Danse bohème from the Carmen Suite and the Ballabile from Aida were accompanied by ballet interludes choreographed by Volker Tietböhl.
Enhanced by spectacular views over the city of Dresden and the River Elbe, this programme captures an evening of truly unforgettable entertainment.
